If you’re looking for a tasty ice cream sundae, you can just scoop out any old flavor of ice cream, plop some Hershey’s syrup on top, and call it a day.  Or – you could make this simple yet unique sundae, using only a few extra ingredients.  We were inspired by this New York Times recipe to attempt salted chocolate sundaes on our own, and they turned out to be pretty easy to make and also delicious.

For these sundaes, you’ll need:

  • 14 ounces of bittersweet chocolate chips (about 1 1/2 bags)
  • Heavy cream
  • Light corn syrup
  • Sugar
  • Slivered or sliced almonds
  • Whipped cream
  • 1 pint each of two different flavors of ice cream (we used vanilla and coffee)

First, to make the salted chocolate, pour about 8 ounces of chocolate chips into a bowl and microwave them in 30-second increments, stirring them in between each round of heating, until they’re completely melted.  Mix in 1/2-3/4 teaspoon of salt, depending on your taste, and pour the chocolate into a pie pan that’s been lined in plastic wrap.  Place another layer of plastic wrap on top and freeze the chocolate for at least an hour.  This is what ours looked like once it was frozen:

Then peel out the chocolate and chop it into bite-sized bits.

Next, to make a chocolate sauce, place another 6 ounces of chocolate in a small saucepan along with 3/4 cup of cream, 3 tablespoons of corn syrup, and 2 tablespoons of sugar and cook everything over medium-low heat.

Stir this mixture continuously so that everything melts together …

… and let it come to a simmer for a few minutes before removing the sauce from the heat.

To put the sundaes together, put a small handful of almonds and a few salted chocolate pieces in the bottom of a bowl or sundae glass.  Scoop in one of your ice cream flavors and drizzle with chocolate sauce, then sprinkle in more almonds and salted chocolate and place in a layer of your other flavor of ice cream.  Top your sundae sauce, extra almonds and salted chocolate, and whipped cream.

That’s it!  This recipe isn’t complicated at all, and you’ll end up with some uniquely flavored ice cream sundaes.  The salted chocolate is a new twist on a classic flavor, and the homemade chocolate sauce is really simple to make.  You only need a little bit of time and a few ingredients to make these sundaes and they’re a lot of fun, so try these out and bring a new dessert into your life!
